How we earn money

The Biology Code is free to read and has no advertising banners or paywall. It is funded by commissions on some of the links it contains. There are two kinds:

• Amazon links. Some entries link to a product page on Amazon. We take part in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites. If you buy through one of these links, we may earn a commission on qualifying purchases.
• Seller links. Some entries link to the seller's own online store instead, through that seller's affiliate program. If you buy through one of those links we may earn a commission from the seller.

Either way it costs you nothing extra. The price you see is set by the seller, and our link does not add to it.

How the links are marked

Wherever an entry has a buy button, a short notice sits next to it. For Amazon links it says "As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases." For seller links it says "We may earn a commission if you buy through this link." These links are also marked in the page's code with rel="sponsored", the standard way of telling search engines that a link is paid or affiliate, together with nofollow. A shorter notice also appears in the footer of every page.

This is how we follow the U.S. Federal Trade Commission's guidance that a relationship with a retailer should be disclosed clearly and close to the recommendation. You can read the FTC's questions and answers on endorsements, which cover affiliate links.

What a commission does not change

A commission never changes a check status or a verdict. We assign the four statuses (Actives, Claims, Guarantees and Testing) from the label, the seller's own pages and public sources, and how we do that is set out on How We Review. The commission a link might earn is not part of that process, and it is not a reason to soften a criticism or to leave one out.

Whether an entry carries a commission link or none makes no difference to how it is reviewed. Commissions on sales are the only money we earn from the retailers and sellers we link to. They are paid on purchases made through our links, not for a review: we do not accept payment from sellers for a review or for a status. If a product has an affiliate link and the label or the evidence does not hold up, the entry will say so.

Which links are not affiliate links

Not every external link pays us. Links to research papers, government pages, certification directories and other sources we cite are plain references, and we earn nothing if you click them. Links between pages of this site are ordinary links too. Only the buy buttons and any other links marked as described above may earn a commission.

Prices and availability

When an entry mentions a price, it is the price we saw on the date shown, and it may have changed. Prices, stock and offers are set by Amazon or the seller, so please check the current price on their page before you buy.
